Menopause

Menopause is described as occurring 12 months after a woman’s last menstrual period, marking the end of her menstrual cycles. It can occur in a women’s 40s or 50s, but the average age is 51 in the United States.

Menopause is a normal biological process and although it marks the end of your fertility, you can remain healthy, vital and sexual. The physical symptoms typically disrupt a woman’s sleep, lowers her energy level or even initiate anxiety or feelings of sadness and loss.

Perimenopause, Premenopause and Postmenopause

The date of menopause is the day after the final cycle of menstrual flow ends. “Perimenopause” is a term used to describe the menopause transition years – which is the time both before and after a woman’s last period ever – that occurs while hormone levels are still fluctuating inconsistently.

“Premenopause” is the word used to describe the years leading up to menopause.

“Postmenopause” is the part of a woman’s life that ensues after the date of menopause. When a woman with her uterus intact has spent a year with no menstrual flow, she is considered to be one year postmenopausal.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) includes estrogens or a combination of estrogens and progesterone. HRT has been used to control the symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

Hormone replacement therapy is available in pill, patch and spray form, transdermal form. Various preparations are available for oral and transdermal forms of HRT, and they vary in both the type and amount of hormones contained in the products.

Bone Health

The date of menopause is the day after the final cycle of menstrual flow ends. “Perimenopause” is a term used to describe the menopause transition years – which is the time both before and after a woman’s last period ever – that occurs while hormone levels are still fluctuating inconsistently.

“Postmenopause” is the part of a woman’s life that ensues after the date of menopause. When a woman with her uterus intact has spent a year with no menstrual flow, she is considered to be one year postmenopausal.

Sexuality

Osteoporosis is a major health concern for women who reach the midpoint in their lives. Bone health can be preserved, however, with proper nutrition that includes sufficient amounts of calcium and vitamin D.

Not smoking and drinking too much – along with an exercise program – has also been shown to slow the effects of bone loss, but medication may be prescribed if it becomes severe.
