Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the main reason we’re advised to wipe from front to back after using the bathroom, because the urethra (the tube that moves urine from the bladder to the outside of the body) is located near the anus.

According to New Beggining’s OB-GYN, bacteria from the large intestine are in the exact position to leave the anus and enter the urethra. From that point, they can travel up to the bladder, and if not treated, continue on to infect the kidneys.

To identify a urinary tract infection, be aware of the following symptoms:

  • A burning sensation when urinating;
  • A frequent or powerful need to urinate;
  • Pain or pressure located in the back or lower abdomen area;
  • Urine that is abnormal in color and smell;
  • Feeling overly tired;
  • Fever or chills.

If a urinary tract infection is suspected, your OB-GYN will collect a urine sample, which will be tested for the presence of UTI-causing bacteria and then possibly prescribe an antibiotic. She’ll also recommend drinking a lot of water and cranberry juice to flush the bacteria out of your system and a heating pad for any discomfort.
