Painful Intercourse

Painful Intercourse

Painful intercourse often causes problems in a couple’s sexual relationship. In addition to the painful physical toll, there is often a negative emotional effect, so Dr. Rania Ibrahim advises that the problem should be addressed as soon as it happens.

Causes of Painful Intercourse

In many instances, a woman can experience painful intercourse if the vagina is not sufficiently lubricated. When this happens, the pain can be lessened if the female relaxes more, the amount of foreplay is extended, or if the couple uses a lubricant.

According to your OB-GYN, a woman can experience painful intercourse if she has one of the following:

  • Vaginismus is a relatively common condition brought on by a fear of being hurt that creates an unintentional spasm in the vaginal muscles.
  • Vaginal infections such as yeast infections are also common.
  • Problems with the opening to the uterus occur during maximum penetration in which the penis comes in contact with the cervix, resulting in pain.
  • Uterine problems can consist of fibroids that can result in painful intercourse.
  • Endometriosis results when the tissue lining the uterus grows outside the uterus.
  • Problems with the ovaries, including ovarian cysts.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) occurs when the tissues located deep inside the pelvic region become badly swollen, causing painful intercourse.
  • Ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg grows outside the uterus.
  • Menopause sometimes causes the vaginal lining to dry out.
  • Intercourse following surgery or childbirth can be painful.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases, some of which herpes sores, genital warts or other STDs.
  • Vaginal injuries as a result of childbirth.

MonaLisa Touch Q & A

What causes vaginal changes after middle age?

As you move through middle age and into menopause, your body goes through a wide range of changes. Shifts in hormone production are behind many of these changes. Others are the result of pregnancy and childbirth.

While every woman has a unique experience during this transition, some experience symptoms that make it difficult to enjoy a healthy and active sex life. Vaginal dryness is a common example and occurs as estrogen levels decline, and your vaginal tissues produce less natural lubrication.
The tissues that line your vaginal walls also begin to thin as you age. This, in combination with vaginal dryness, can cause tiny tears during sex, making the experience uncomfortable and sometimes even painful.

What is MonaLisa TouchⓇ?

MonaLisa Touch is a functional vaginal treatment that can address these changes and improve your vaginal function. The treatment uses a fractional carbon dioxide laser to create tiny changes in the structure of your vaginal walls.

Your body perceives these changes as tiny injuries, and launches a strong and swift healing response. New collagen is produced, which thickens and tightens vaginal walls. Treatments also prompt changes in your vaginal mucosa, increasing natural lubrication.

Some women who experience mild urinary stress incontinence (leaking urine) achieve noticeable improvements after MonaLisa Touch treatments.

Are MonaLisa Touch treatments painful?

There is no significant discomfort during MonaLisa Touch treatments. The system uses an internal vaginal wand to deliver energy to the targeted tissues. The wand is thoughtfully designed to be comfortable.

There is no need for any form of anesthesia during treatment. You may notice a slight sensation of warmth and mild vibration during your sessions, which only last around five minutes each. Most women benefit from up to three sessions, with 40-60 days between each visit.

It’s important to refrain from sex for several days to give your body a chance to adjust after each treatment. It takes several weeks for your body to create new collagen, but many women report seuxal and urinary function improvements right away.
