Well Woman Exam Q & A

What is a well woman exam?

A well woman exam is a routine women’s health visit that focuses on delivering the screenings you need to check for reproductive health issues. These visits should be part of your overall health planning and are a great way to take some time and look after your own needs.

As you move through the phases of life, your screening needs will shift and change. There will also be different areas of focus, depending on your lifestyle and family planning choices. Well women exams are a chance to reconnect with your gynecologist and get the guidance you need to stay as healthy as possible.

What happens during a well woman exam?

The initial portion of your visit involves gathering some information about your vital signs. Expect a quick check of your height, weight, blood pressure, and temperature. You’ll have time to discuss any areas of concern you have or changes you’ve noticed since your last visit.

A pelvic exam is a standard part of well woman examinations. This simple process allows your gynecologist a chance to inspect your vaginal and cervical tissues for signs of abnormality. A Pap smear can be done during your pelvic exam, and involves gathering a sample of cells from your cervix to check for signs of cervical cancer.

The pelvic exam allows your gynecologist to evaluate you for signs of pelvic organ prolapse including a cystocele or rectocele. If present, treatment options include wearing a pessary device or surgical repair.

A professional breast exam checks for lumps or other tissue abnormalities, and you can also learn how to perform breast checks at home. Your gynecologist also performs an external abdominal check to feel for signs of tissue changes.

What kinds of issues can be discussed during well woman exams?

The best way to get the most out of our routine well woman exams is to be open and honest with your gynecologist. Your doctor is here to help and to provide guidance on any aspect of women’s health.

Some of the topics you might discuss during your well woman exam include:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Birth control
  • STD screening and prevention
  • Fertility planning
  • Sexual health
  • Pelvic pain
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Postpartum issues

Nothing is off-limits during these visits. The more information you exchange with your gynecologist, the better your doctor can guide and enhance your health care.
